check your chain

The most powerful tool in your arsenal

What is a chain checker?

You might be thinking this is just another toolbox filler, something that seems like a good idea at the time, but rarely gets used. We hear that a lot in the workshop, so bear with us on this one.

So, what is a chain checker? Simply put, it’s a tool designed to measure chain wear and tell you when your chain needs replacing. If you’re used to only changing a chain once it snaps or starts skipping, that might not sound particularly important.

But from a workshop perspective, chain wear is one of the most common causes of expensive drivetrain damage. Used correctly, a chain checker can save you thousands over the lifetime of your bike and here’s why.

How it works

The science behind a chain checker is fairly straightforward. One end of the tool is precisely shaped to sit on the rollers of a new chain. On an unworn chain, the spacing between the rollers is tight enough that the checker rests on top of the chain rather than dropping in.

As a chain wears through everyday riding, the pins and rollers gradually elongate (this is why your chain skips). This increases the gap between the rollers, allowing the edged end of the chain checker to sit further down inside the chain. The deeper the tool drops, the more worn the chain is.

Chain checkers also include wear indicators. A new chain will read 0% wear, while a chain reading 0.75% (or higher) is considered worn and should be replaced to prevent accelerated wear to the cassette and chainrings.

Heres the diffrence:

A new chain

A old chain

Why is this so important?

So now that you know how it works, why does this actually matter?

The key to a healthy, mechanically sound drivetrain is regular maintenance, everyone knows that. What many riders don’t realise, however, is just how much influence the chain has on the rest of the drivetrain. Components like cassettes, jockey wheels, and chainrings can far outlast a chain, but only if the chain is replaced at the right time.

Once a chain passes a certain level of wear, it doesn’t just perform poorly, it actively accelerates wear on the rest of the drivetrain. Continue riding a worn chain for too long and you’ll eventually be looking at replacing the entire drivetrain, which can be a significant hit to your wallet.

This is where a chain checker earns its place in your toolbox. It removes the guesswork by telling you exactly when it’s time to replace your chain, helping you avoid unnecessary damage and keeping the rest of your drivetrain running smoothly for much longer.

In the world of cycling, small details make a big difference. A worn chain may seem minor at first, but ignoring it can quickly turn into expensive damage. A simple tool like a chain checker takes the guesswork out of chain maintenance, protects your drivetrain, and ultimately saves you money.

Whether you’re a weekend rider or a serious cyclist, checking your chain regularly should be part of your routine. Keep your drivetrain in top condition, replace chains on time, and enjoy smoother, safer rides for years to come.

Stop guessing, start checking your bike (and your wallet) will thank you.
