Here’s Why It’s Time to Upgrade

Your helmet is your most important piece of cycling safety gear – but like everything else, it doesn’t last forever. If your helmet is a few years old, has taken a knock, or just isn’t up to modern standards, it might be time to upgrade. Here’s why.

1. Age Matters

Helmets naturally degrade over time, even if they haven’t been involved in a crash. UV exposure, sweat, and daily wear weaken the materials, particularly the EPS foam responsible for absorbing impacts. Most helmet manufacturers – and safety organizations – recommend replacing your helmet every 3–5 years to make sure you’re properly protected.

2. Crash Damage Isn’t Always Obvious

Even a minor impact can compromise a helmet’s ability to protect you, and sometimes the damage isn’t visible. If you’ve ever had a crash, dropped your helmet, or even knocked it hard while in storage, it’s safest to replace it rather than take a risk.

3. Advances in Technology

Helmet technology has come a long way in recent years. One of the biggest developments is MIPS® (Multi-directional Impact Protection System), which is designed to reduce rotational forces during certain impacts. MIPS helmets add a low-friction layer inside the shell, helping your head move slightly inside the helmet on impact – and potentially reducing the risk of brain injury.

Other newer features like better ventilation, lighter materials, improved fit systems, and enhanced visibility options (including integrated lights and reflective elements) also make today’s helmets more comfortable and safer than ever.

4. Fit and Comfort

If your helmet isn’t comfortable, you’re less likely to wear it properly – or at all. Modern helmets offer improved adjustability and lighter designs, so you’ll stay safer and enjoy your rides more. A well-fitting helmet can make a huge difference on long days in the saddle.
